His appointment, effective June 18, is to replace Prof Datuk Mohd Noh Dalimin, who is going on compulsory retirement.
"I'm grateful to God for the appointment as the UMS VC, which is actually a responsibility to bring the university to greater heights. It is not an easy task, but I will do my best," he told reporters at a function attended by the prime minister, Barisan Nasional leaders and government employees in Sabah here today.
Prof Kamarulzaman, 55, did his master's degree at the University of York on a Sabah Foundation scholarship and a few years after that, did his doctorate in biochemistry at the Ohio State University in the United States.
He is the first Sabahan to be conferred a full professor by a local university.
Let see what is Prof ambition:
“We want to make UMS an icon of excellence not only for the state but also for the whole country”adding this would make UMS a university of choice for local and foreign students.
“We want to open the eyes of various quarters, we want to produce more leaders from among the local community in future”
On the plans already made by UMS, he said he does not at present wish to make any changes as they all seem good and therefore worth continuing.
