Kota Kinabalu: Police rescued a 49-year-old mother who tried to jump off the third floor of a shophouse in Luyang, at around 10am, Tuesday.
It was learnt that the woman, known only as Shim, decided to jump from her unit after learning that her 18-year-old daughter had run away with a man at 4am the same day.
Both Shim and her daughter are from Sandakan and had returned to the State capital two months ago.
According to her neighbour, who is staying on the second floor, Shim had told her that her daughter had run away with the man around 4am and that they had locked the door.
Another neighbour Shiela Augustine, 21, said she had witnessed arguments between the mother and daughter several times.
"I don't think they were in good terms because they would argue a lot," said the neighbour, adding that Shim had on several occasions held a knife during their heated arguments.
"I only realised about the incident (attempted suicide) when I heard cries from next door around 10am," Shiela added. Neighbours who saw the incident tried to talk Shim out of it but she ignored them.
Police who arrived at the scene had to break open the door to rescue Shim.
It was learnt that Shim was also holding a knife and had attempted to stab herself when police approached her. The team managed to cool her down before bringing her to safer ground.
A Fire and Rescue team was also at the scene.
